Is massage safe during pregnancy

There can be a lot of uncertainty around if massage is “safe" during pregnancy. You’ll find many therapists that will not be comfortable working with you during your 1st trimester. It can be very stressful trying to find a space that is willing and comfortable working with you. You can be assured that massage is safe in the 1st trimester and all throughout your pregnancy with the proper training and knowledge. Finding therapists that are passionate and confident about working with child-bearing individuals is key.

Here are things to consider when looking for spaces that offer prenatal massage:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

    • Address your concerns with the therapist you have in mind, and make sure you both are a good fit for each other. Ask any and all questions!

  • Is the space centered around reproductive health?

    • When setting the intention to receive a prenatal massage, you want to be very intentional with where you'll be receiving care. Not all spaces are passionate about prenatal bodywork, so be very mindful where you go.

  • Is the therapist comfortable working with all birthing bodies?

    • Everyone's pregnancy is unique to them, not all pregnancies are the same. Not all pregnant bodies look how you envision one to look. If it’s important for you to have a therapist that understands this, then consider seeking someone who honors and respects your unique pregnant body.
